The Eight Functions of CMWorkshop©

NOTE: Please don't be put off by arcane explanations.
The best way
to learn how CMWorkshop works is simply to try it.

1. The list of Chamber Music works

You can make your own list, or use the list included with the program. This section permits one
to edit (change or delete) current entries, or add new ones. Alternatively, one can copy the present file
to another directory and start a completely new list. Each entry contains the list number, the category
(number and type of instruments), composer, title, instruments, publisher (if known at the time the list
was assembled), and comments, which might include the level of difficulty.

2. Entering and editing the list of participants

All essential information about the players is recorded via tables. In addition to name, address,
and essential contact information, each player's instrument
(or up to 2 instruments)
plus level of competence for each are recorded. Finally, a space is provided for comments about each player.
(Return)

3. Workshops may be arranged initially by choosing Compositions from the Music List (Music First), or by selecting Players (Players First).

A. If Music First is selected, the user is guided into choosing among pieces in the Music List sorted by Category.
After several pieces are chosen, suitable Players and instruments are selected for each position in each composition.

B. If Players First is selected, the mixture of players' instruments is used to form a list of possible Ensembles.
Players may then be assigned to Groups to complete the workshop.

(Return)

4. Review Groups:

As Ensembles are completed they are saved in the "Groups.txt" file. These groups may then be reviewed and edited.
The player order may be changed, or players in one group may be Exchanged with players in another
group. After each
group is reviewed a Location may be added along with an additional short reference such as a coach name.

(Return)

5. Revise Formed Groups:

If the formed groups must be modified this procedure makes it possible. A subtitle for this section might be,
"When all else fails". For example, if a player in a string quartet cannot be present, the group can be changed to a
string trio. If sufficient players remain unassigned, they may be substituted or supplemented to form a quintet.
As the revised groups are completed they are saved into the "Groups.txt" file.

(Return)

6. Find music to fit the players' instrument mix...

Assigning ALL workshop participants to available chamber music pieces can be a difficult task.
But the list of possible instrument combinations (Ensembles) is limited, and this program function fits the variety
of participant instruments to Ensembles derived from actual compositions in the Chamber Music list.
In a "reversal" of the process, all compositions which fit a particular Ensemble can be viewed for reference

(Return)

7. Find music written for a particular instrument or group of instruments.

This reference aid allows one to search the list of 1250 Chamber Music works for pieces by category, instrument, or
combinations of instruments.

(Return)

8. Printing the workshop assignments

The workshop participants must know what and where they're playing and with whom. Final assignment lists are
sorted by player name, and show also the place and composition to be played. An optional list shows all compositions,
locations, and the assigned players.
